About My Work

The central focus in my work is to help my clients explore their unique, subjective experience and to make sense of it in a way which is both deeply meaningful and healing. Often we can only really see ourselves in the mirror provided by another. The framework of empathic understanding and support provided by the psychotherapeutic relationship enables the client to see him- or herself more clearly. By understanding strengths and weaknesses in the light of early experiences which have shaped them, emotional distress is relieved and individuals are empowered to make more effective choices.

Contemporary psychoanalysis is a psychotherapeutic method which can benefit a wide range of people including adults, adolescents, children, families, and couples. It is a valuable avenue for self-discovery and personal growth, helps create more intimate and rewarding relationships with others, and develops the client’s own resources for resolving emotional problems. Unlike the picture of a bearded professor listening in neutral silence while the patient lies on a couch, contemporary psychoanalysis is an interactive conversation in which therapist and client collaborate together in understanding the psychological patterns which are causing the problems.

An analyst trained in contemporary psychoanalysis focuses on helping the client understand how past experiences - - the attachments, separations, and losses which have occurred in early life - determine current-day contexts of living, working, and loving. Though derived from the discoveries of Sigmund Freud which were made a century ago, contemporary psychoanalysis is based on scientific research in child development and neurobiology and is an advanced method of psychotherapeutic treatment. Focus on the individual's experiences in the here-and-now of the psychotherapeutic relationship facilitates the development of new awareness and insight and begins to transform even long-standing and intractable patterns of painful experience.
